I work in this field - go to a technical school and ask for a brochure or go online and find out what's in your area. These courses can be taken at night - it will just take longer to complete. Some veterinary clinics require a certified vet tech and some don't - it all depends on where you want to work. You may find a veterinary that will train you. The pay in this field is not that prestigious but its a rewarding job if you LOVE animals. Good luck to you!

Can't say it's very prestigous, don't know. But if you have a love for animals then that is enought. Good luck.
