That wives tale spawns from years and years ago when successful pregnancy rates were way low b/c women still worked the farms, did excessive manual labor, and didn't have vitamins, sonograms, and other such nifty things to make sure their pregnancies went along fine.
Nowadays, I think it's fine to buy whatever you wish whenever you wish (unless of course your Dr is at all concerned about your pregnancy not going to term - this is something they will always bring up with you).
As far as other myths go - I belive the Lots of heartburn = a baby with lots of hair. I've known mothers for whom this wasn't true for...but so far it's true with me. Sonogram this past week had his hair at 3/4 of an inch long right at 37/38 weeks!!!

Best of luck!

that is just a myth, dont listen to anyone saying things like that. That is as accurate as people who say that if you put a ring on a string and hang it a couple inches from your belly and depending on the way it moves either circular or back and forth it will determine the sex of your baby. If you believe that I have some magic beans you might want to buy from me.

Well, as you said it's a myth so don't believe it !! It must have started in earlier days when there was no assurance of pregnancies carrying thru till nine months. so, if you survive for first 5-6 months then you might sail thru. In today's world these myths have no value.

A myth is just that - a myth.

Most old wives' tales are also created by myths.

After having 5 children, and now expecting twins - I have never relied on anything but modern medical science.

well, there might be some truth in it. the chances that you will miscarry are more likely in the first three months. this is probably why people do not tell anyone about the pregnancy until after the three months.

It wasn't for us. But I do know someone who had two miscarriages relatively late who wouldn't buy anything for her next pregnancies until they were born. I can understand that.
