Ok- pop isn't a genre. It's just any music that happens to be popular. However, the idea of punk is sort of anti-pop. Punk is supposed to go against the mainstream.

I think it's probably the WEIRDEST genre that way (and I love punk, don't get me wrong). No matter how many people listen to rap, it's still rap, right? But the more people who listen to a punk band, the less punk it becomes. Weird.

That said, modern "punk" isn't punk. NOT because it's popular, but because the vast majority of it is crap (Notice I said vast majority, not all). I swear, if I hear another so-called punk song of a guy with a whiny, girly voice singing about how he's an outsider and doesn't fit in, I WILL kick SOMEBODY'S ***...

I totally agree about Good Charlotte. Green Day & Blink-182 are argueable .. but the other bands that you listed are deff. punk.

& saying Avril Lavigne is punk is a disgrace to the genre. Umm Sk8r Boi is as pop as Jessica Simpson's music ? Wtf.. ?

Because they sound like many of the punk bands now a days. Pop is more of a rap or R&B thing. They also dress more pun than pop which is like prep

Oh thank you for being to refreshing....I listened to punk 20 years ago when it really was punk. Kinda like Maryln Manson being "goth" and bad and blah blah blah....he is in this for one reason $$$ and his 'hook' is being bad. Give me the real deal like Skinny Puppy and Frontline Assembly (i know they arent really punk either but i was trying to make a long winded point). Punk has reached the same demise. These little kids who sport a couple tattoos, dye their hair, and wear thier designer "punk' clothes...leave mom and dad's house borrowing the lexus to recorded thier music that someone else wrote. Give me the Ramones, DK, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, and C.O.C. anyday. They fought for their music to be heard and they played every possible dive out there and most lived it.
Avril, blink and charlotte are jokes but that this the main stream "punk" the youth are being told to like...and like the lemers our culture is...............
ok time to get off my soap box...........

You're totally right. They're only punk in what they choose to wear, but their music is more whiney-pop. Somehow they pretend to be rebelling against the mainstream, all the while rolling around in the materist consumerism of it all. It doesn't make sense. I can't stand this emo-pseudopunk-ultrapop garbage.

I kind of agree...
But I have to say, no offense, that I don't really care lol.
Not to be rude.
Who really cares which particular genre your music taste fits into?
If you like it, listen to it. If you dont, then don't listen to it.
I don't see why it matters all that much, although I see where you're coming from.
Some bands are more "punky" than others, but I think Jessica Simpson falls more into the pop category =)
If that helped any lol...

If you are so "real" and "hardcore" punk, why do you feel the need to prove to everyone else how hardcore you are, and putting everyone else down? I agree that music is pop, not real punk, but why do you need to call everyone else a poser to make yourself seem more real? I always see that that is a huge trend with punks (or any other group, but punks especially) to advertise how damn hardcore punk they are.

well, that type of "punk" to me is a fashion statement more than a life style, and that is probably why it is referred to as "pop-punk" because it is pop, with a guitar riff here and there, and some s.hitty a.ss singing
