There are and have been 50 states in the union of states that comprises the United States of America, since 1959, when the last two states, Hawaii, and Alaska, poined the union.
The Capitol is Washington situated in the District of Columbia.
Each star, on the united States flag represents a state. The first of the modern U.S. flags, each separate star represented one of the original 13 colonies. There were numerous progentitor flags that had other symbols, such as the "don't tread on me" flag. the snake flag and one which had the stars in a circle. The Betsy Ross story was a fabrication started by her grandson in the 1830's.
