As I posted before, I rear-ended a car at a red light and since it was my first time I didn't know what to do, and thus didn't call the police to file a report. Some of the posts to my last question said I could still file a police report, perhaps. I live in Canada, does anyone know if it applies here?

And if it is still applicable, does it also mean that I can file a report without the police WITHOUT getting my insurance company involved (my family really doesn't want the premiums to go up)?

In most cases if a traffic accident occurs and you move the vehicles and wait days to report it to the police they will not do a report. For several reasons. One is they can not testify to anything they would write in the report because they were not there so the report is worthless. And two, they have no way of determining fault at that juncture.

I suggest you carry a disposable camera with you in the glove-box or your purse so if this happens again you will at least have the accident photographs as some record of the event. Also take a picture of the driver of the other vehicle to put them at the scene.

By waiting to report the accident you have made this purely a civil matter between you and the other driver and even if you want to not get your insurance involved the other driver might. It is easy to collect money from an insurance company and a lot harder from a person.

Hopefully you did what was required for an accident in what every country your in. In America we have to identify to the other driver and exchange information at the very least or we can be charged with leaving the scene of an accident and that is a criminal issue.

Contact the policing agency where you live they will tell you what the law is.

wouldn't apply really or help you out. since the police wasn't there on the scene, they can just take hearsay from you and the other driver. insurance companies will get involved. I assume the other driver has already contacted his company which will mean that you will be contacted shortly as well. assuming that is you guys exchanged information at the scene. chances are good though that your premiums will go up since 99.9% of all rear end collisions are the fault of the driver in back. no chance in fighting it either since you'll lose this case everytime.

why would you want to do a mis-stake in reporting it if it was your fault! it will put points on your driving record and it may go on the incurence and rase the rates
if the car is fixed and no one knows but you rock on!!

but if your thinking about insurance repairing the car with out reporting hmm I think you can find a few garages around where you live that will work like that with you but if the car is totaled well out of luck but tslk to a lawyer friend and see what he said do not goto a lawyer first and spill your story cause he might turn it over automatically to insurance
