I just got my letter of denial today. I know that now I'm "supposed" to get a lawer to fight the decision.

What exactly will a lawer do that makes them change their mind? Do they fill out forms, or testify, or what....?

They know how to work the system. I hear most people usually get turned down the first time regardless of how severe their condition is.
Make sure you have plenty of documentation from your doctors clearly stating why you are disabled.
Look in your yellow pages for disability lawyers they advertize on tv all the time. Good luck with your appeal.

Your "physical proof" that you've had a disability over a length of time and that it will stay that way in the future that gets you on SSD. You should always start out with having a SS attorney. You don't pay till it's thru the court system, so go thru the yellow pages, find out which attorneys are specializing in SSD and talk with them.

Lawyers have their paralegals take your application on the phone if you can't get to their office, they will determine if they can take the case or not, and then they will research your case. You provide them with the doctors names, where you've had your x-rays and when, and all what happened to you and when, and how you are feeling, what jobs you've tried for, etc. In court is it between you and the judge (so you need to be prepared with proof in hand for him).

Lawyers are a member of the court....and because of that they must be there to represent anyone with situations in court for matters over $5,000...so you need an attorney....and, in a SS case it's up to you and the judge.

Don't give up because they seldom grant it the first time. Just call your local SS office and ask them what to do and they can help you. All lawyers do is cost you part of your first check, which will be quite a bit since they pay from the day you applied once you are accepted. Calling SS is the best step to take and they will give you all the information and forms you need.

He takes your claim and sues the SS admin. He'll get doctors to testify on your behalf also, they will also take a part of the settlement.
