It's Eye black and comes from the sport of baseball...

it helps reduce the amount of glare from the sun.

I knew a pro football player who was gay, by the way. Anyway, the black is under the eyes to absorb extra light and make the vision sharper.

It helps keep the sun and the stadium lights from reflecting off their skin and into their eyes. They don't use make-up (or grease paint as it often was) anymore, it's now a tape, similar to a band-aid.

the sun will reflect form under the eyes, so if you put black there, that will stop the blinding reflection of the sun.
