Nancy Butts was born in Ohio and grew up with three sisters in Texas, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Virginia. Ms. Butts graduated magna *** laude from Duke University with a degree in religion and trained as a physician’s assistant before settling in Georgia and becoming a journalist. She worked as a staff writer and news editor for eleven years, won three awards from the Georgia Press Association and was recognized by the Georgia School Board Association for her coverage of education issues.

Nancy Butts’s first novel, Cheshire Moon, was published by Front Street in 1996. Her characterization of Miranda, the hearing-impaired protagonist of Cheshire Moon, was aided by several years of volunteer work with hearing-impaired children and a familiarity with sign language. Nancy Butts lives in Barnesville, Georgia with her husband, Don, a college professor; her son, Evan, a black belt in karate; and three dogs. Her second novel, The Door in the Lake was published in 1997, and she is currently working on her third.
