I live in the Detroit area, and am traveling to Italy in a week. I want to convert about $500 to euros. Should I try to find a place here or wait until I get to Italy?

Withdraw the money from your checking account from an ATM in Italy! You'll get the best exchange rate that way. Check with your bank at home to make sure your ATM card is set-up for International withdrawals. You need a four digit NUMERICAL pin.

Hope that helps! Have a great trip.

Whenever we traveled throughout Europe, Italy was our first destination. We exchanged our money in the airport...it was cheaper than doing it here. And if you are worried about the language barrier, don't because most people in the tourist cities (like Rome, Florence, Bologna, Venice...and so forth) speak at least some broken English. You'll be fine, and you'll have the time of your life! I loved Italy and can't wait to go back!

Go to the bank at home. Lots of Italians don't know English, so it would just be easier in the long run.

And definitely go to a bank; there are lots of places you can convert your money, but the banks give the best rates.

You can do it at the airport or at one of the many money changing places that advertise the current exchange on the sidewalk. Don't do it at a hotel unless you have to. But why take so much cash? Just take it out of the countless ATMS. It's too easy.

You get a better rate if you what. May be change at the air port just enough to get you to a bank or money changer Air ports dont give he best rate, but for taxi money it's OK.

I suggest you to change your money at home, because in Europe it will be less money that home. Each european country protects its euros, so the rate will convert you less euros.
