It's not to be invisible in the forest and they aren't dumb. It's to get rid of the glare from the sun.

the answers so far are partly right! the other side to that is when you look at someone at a distance can you see there eyes? ok now a football player has his helmet on and b;ack heavy line under his eye is it harder to see where that person is looking. I sure think so cause for one your focue on the most outstanding feature and that helps to distract from the play being called yes, true other sports do that in different color white for golfers and that is for sun and glare umm baseball have not really seen it but I am not saying it does not exsist. umm skating I think I seen it there not for sure.

Football players, baseball player, and other athletes who participate out in the sun wear them so that the sunlight doesn't reflect off their cheeks into their eyes. It sounds kind of silly, but they really do help.

The black eye makeup is to deflect the sunlight from glaring in their eyes. It is drawn to the dark color instead of directly in their line of sight.
