Do you always have to sleep in the dorm or is it okay to spend nights out of the dorm? Liking the response so far, thanks.

When you get to college, you are going to have an RA who will go over all this stuff with you, but here's a general rundown:

There are no hard and fast rules except be respectful to the community and observe quiet hours. Whatever else you do is up to you. That's the beauty of college.

For the first few days, at least, keep your door open so people can stop by and socialize. Clean up after yourself in common rooms and in the shower. Don't be disgusting and respect the cleaning staff.

Be aware of thefts and intruders - always lock your door when you are not in the building and do not ever let someone you don't know into the building.

The nice things about dorms are that they are usually close to campus and well taken care of. You don't have to worry about paying bills or landlords. The downside is that there are a lot of restrictions on what you can have in your room (i.e. no halogen lamps, heating pads, etc). You should go to your college's website and look on their residential life page for a list of what you can and cannot bring to college.

When i lived in a dorms the rules were: No Alcohol, No guys allowed after a certain hour, and you couldnt have guys over during final examination days because of people studying. The advantage of dorms is meeting new people and living away from home. It's also an advantage because most dorm rooms are right on campus and close to classes!

When my daughter went to college, I don't thing that there were any hard and fast 'rules'. I'm sure that your college sent you a handbook if you're going to be living on campus. If they did, then read it.
Do: keep your room locked (hopefully you'll have a room card and not a key).
Do: leave your door open when you're home if you want to make friends.
Do: decorate your room to make it more personal.
Do: participate in dorm activities if you want to meet people.

All dorms are different. Some have more than two people in a room. Some have the bathrooms down the hall. So you're just going to have to see what happens. Some campuses are safe, some aren't. So it's hard to give you advise as what Not to do. Just always be aware of your surroundings and who's around you. Be safe.

Rules depend on your dorm, but most incl no alcohol, no halogen lamp, no pets, and quiet hours. If you're living in a single-sex dorm, no people from the opposite gender during certain hours. The number of your visitors and the duration they can stay at your place might be limited.

Advantages: cheaper rent, don't have to cook (if you buy a meal plan), small or no fee for cable tv and internet, no electricity or water bills, SAFE, able to meet people from other faculties/schools, lots of dorm events, no need to buy/bring furnitures, close to campus, lots of facilities inside the dorm (computer room, exercise room etc.)

Disadvantages: communal bathrooms, quiet hours, roommate(s), plus all those things under Rules.

General tips: don't go for triple room (the less roommates the better) and don't bring a lot of things before moving in (you can always buy more later). Lock your door. Go to your Residence Advisor (RA) anytime you have any question or problem.

My first college had a rule against no sex in the dorms, anyone cought doing this got 10 hrs of comunity servie, and had to pray along with a write up. The lack of privacy is a big disadvantage mean there is hardly any. The advantage is all the activities and the proximity to school.

Check your school's handbook. Assume the rules listed are enforced. You can always relax later.

In general, do unto others as you want them to do to you.
In general, trust everyone but trust no one. Lock you doors always! Keep few valuables in your room. Don't brag or flaunt money and valuables. Hide them. But don't be paranoid or accuse anyone either. People like to think you trust them.

Benefits are social but also convenience. No commute, no parking hassles and no little brothers or sisters!

THEFT: always lock your doors even if you are just going to the bathroom - your RA will tell you but you really have to listen b/c this is one of the biggest problems everywhere

ADV: closer to class than other places
