I would say that loyalty and wisdom are two themes. You could also look at what constitutes a familial bond, or the much overlooked issue of fathers and sons. There are a lot of father/son relationships to explore, and most people go for teh more obvious father/daughter relationships.

Well it's been a while, but as I recall the main theme is GREED!
Then there is manipulation, miss-placed love, and unrequited devotion.
