STOMACH

The veretbrate stomach is not homologous to invertebrate stomach. Lampreys have no stomach. In herbivores and in those carnivores which swallow whole food the muscular gizzard as a second chamber of stomach predominates. Bird stomach is 2-chambered, one being gizzard. The lining of gizzard secretes keratin which hardens into plates or ridges for grinding. Owl and other carnivores swallow whole prey; indigestible parts are stored in gizzard, rolled into soft pellets which can be periodically regurgitated & disposed of through the mouth. Crocodiles also have similar gizzards. In other vertebrates the stomachs are composed of a single chamber in which food is stored and intially digested. In some vertebrates the stomach is modified into rumen (cattle, certain marsupials, peckary, wallaby) while rest of the stomach is normal.

Birds, lizards and dinosaurs' remains all have gizzards. By golly, can birds be related to dinosaurs? No wonder alligator tastes like chicken.
