or do they need money from the NBA to keep the WNBA afloat?

No most WNBA teams lose money if not all of them. The support from the NBA keeps the WNBA going. At one time if you wanted to buy ad time for NBA games you had to buy some time on WNBA games. The WNBA is celbrating it's ten year anversary go Detroit Shock!

WNBA loses lots of money. I don't believe that the NBA is propping up the WNBA financially.

Some teams do. The teams with a bigger fan base do profit. Most teams are NOT backed by the NBA team in their city. They do not receive money from them.

In certain towns yes, I'm a huge fan of the Seattle Storm and I know they are making a profit and have dedicated fans.

its sad how ppl won't support the WNBA..........although they lost alot of money right now i believe their stable.
