LOL!! I don't remember having any dangerous toys, maybe things that have changes today because they could be swallowed so easily like Little People and Leggos.
My parents were funny, we did get a set of lawn darts for Christmas but my dad gave them away- too dangerous and I got a chemistry set but they were always going to help me with it later- it never happened. At the same time, my parents did not believe in riding bikes with helmets because they rode without them all their lives and they are okay.
I do make my kids ride with helmets- one , its the law, and two, my daughter had a bike accident where her helmet saved her head- not long after a local boy went into a coma for two weeks after riding without one.
My girls do have rifles, hunting bows, chemistry sets, scooters, skateboards and all manner of things that my parents would have died before they let me have. The key is they get training and instruction and a good amount of supervision when using anything that they could harm themselves or someone else with.

Dad bought me a *real* carpenter set when I was 5. Tools were miniature versions, but very real and very sharp. First time I used the saw I almost sawed my thumb off, it's still a bit weird & I can wiggle it in a pretty interesting way. Mum hid the tools after that.

My Uncle whom I loved went to the Amazonas and gave me a real blowpipe with darts when he came back home, plus told me about the poisonous frogs and curare and all. I was 10 and in 7th heaven. Won't tell how me and best friend tried to poison the darts and what we did. As an adult, I reluctantly agree that pressie was a bit.... OTT

A pogo stick. I don't know how many band aids that thing put me through... Also had the lawn darts... and the big sharp metal trucks/cranes/bulldozers..... Hmm what else... Ohh... a wood burning kit. Those little ovens, those were fun to experiment with! A metal jungle gym that i wound up falling off of countless times...

I sure did have fun with all that stuff though!!

The question is, "What didn't they give me and my brothers?" There were chemistry sets, electronics sets, slingshots that my dad made himself with industrial strength tubing, nunchucks, pocket knives (not the swiss army variety, but the larger hunting variety), bb guns, pellet guns, real guns (although only after hunter's safety classes), crossbows (the toy variety, but they could really shoot something), bows and arrows (oh, yes, the real thing), there was a blow gun that we only had supervised access to, we had access to all my dad's tools: table saws, band saw, miter saw, electric drills, and all manner of hand tools...after all that the only serious injury to any of us was accidentally self-inflicted with a kitchen steak knife (note:it was not me). What were they thinking?! This is a fun question--takes me back :)

That's funny! add boxing gloves and a bow & arrow to the list!

I wonder if there is a link to all the "cool" stuff that we had as children.... the fact that kids today do get to have this stuff... and all of the school shootings/ violance! just a thought.

Okay, I totally take the prize with this question. My father left a loaded .45 in the bedside table and didn't stop me from handling it when I was tiny.
