is any of the computer connected to internet ?
if yes.. then buy a router so that the comps can be in the same network created by the router.

if no.. connect the 2 comps with a cable.. assign static IP for network connections

for assigning static IP :-
(rest is assuming that u have XP operating system...)
Go to network connections, you will find local area connection.
right click on it and select properties.
there you will find "internetProtocol(TCP/IP)"
right click that and select properties)

set it to use the following IP address
IP address - 192.168.1.100(on 1st comp) / 192.168.1.101(on 2nd comp)
subnet - 255.255.255.0
gwateway - 192.168.1.1

then enable file and print sharing on both the computers

There are few ways to do it.

1. You need a router (that will bring you to internet if you have cable/dsl modem)
2. You need a hub (that is similar to #1 but you can use proxy server for others to go on internet)
3. You need a cross over cable.. - that is straight network

The best way to make a good network that you can use to not only connect the two computers but also share an internet connection, is to buy a router.

This will take care of handling your LAN as well as allow you to share your broadband internet connection now or in the future when you get one.

Have fun!

Used wrong cable, note cross-overs are usually made-to-order for those that already notice this fact, if you just pulled the cable wrapped in package off a shelf you need 2 of them and the aforementioned router/hub/switch/concentrator/whatever box to go as intermediaries.
