Technically, it's a representative republic, which is one particular type of democratic government.

A democracy in general is where the people have the final say, through voting. A pure democracy has people voting directly on every decision. A representative republic has people voting for elected officials, who then make the actual decisions.

So, yes, we are a democracy as that term is broadly used, because the people vote and have the ultimate decision over who is in power. But it's not a pure democracy, because of how our government is structured.

The US form of government is technically a "democratic republic". This means Americans democratically elect leaders, and then those leaders make decisions on their behalf. "True" democracy would probably have to be government by referendum, whereby everyone voted on everything, and nothing would ever get done!

It is easy to determine for yourself. If you speak loud enough against your government, just see what happens. Then you know to what extent your country is democratic.

What happens to people who protest - are they taken away before they can speak?

What happens to people who loudly disagree with the governments policies? Are they locked away?

Are there many people under censorship? Are there many people abducted by government officials (secret service) because they pose a certain threat? Are there many phones tapped or house searches?

Just see for yourself and you have your answer
