Sprint and Verizon don't use simcards; maybe that's why your not familiar with them.

IF you have another provider, take the battery out and underneath the battery there will be the simcard.

It carrys all pertinent information on your account, Address book, photos, and other stuff. More importantly though it serves as key to access your cellular providers services. Without officially registering your phone with your company, you take out your simcard from phone and put it into a phone you found, and you would still be able to get service because your simcard is registered and authorize to use the services regardless of what phone you use.
