Because it is flexible and allows for interpretations. Because it is not too efficient. Efficiency allows bad decicions to be made and executed before we realize they're bad. Almost all the bad decisions in American History have been extraconstitutional.

The three independent branches operating in a state of dynamic tension ensures that the USA constitution remains flexible and relevant.

Because it was broadly written, and included specific (difficult) provisions on how to amend itself. Thus, it could be changed over time, meaning that it wouldn't have to be thrown out just because it didn't fit, but it could not be changed casually or on a whim.

Also, because the Supreme Court reads between the lines of the document, which makes the scope of applicability far greater than the text itself. Absent that, any new situation would require changes, which weakens the rigidity of the document.

Finally, Marbury v. Madison established the concept of constitutional preemption, such that any lower law that conflicts with the Constitution is invalid. That gave it the legal "final say".

I wonder how much longer it will last. Our constitution was based on the constitutions of the original colonies. I would suggest that you read them to see how much of our nation's constitution has been taken out of its original context and misinterpreted. I wish the founding fathers had been more specific.
For instance.....the separation of church and state means that there is to be no federally sponsored and supported mandatory state religion. It means nothing more than that.
...the right to bear arms.....At the time this was written, there were firearms in every household and everybody knew how to use them PROPERLY, for hunting and for personal protection.

Good question but I don't really have a good answer.

If you read it over and examine what our founding fathers wrote...it is just awe inspiring. It still amazes me to this day and I have so much respect for what they did for us by setting the foundation and the corner stones like they did. I just hope we don't twist it and distort it anymore, but that's not reality...

Because the PEOPLE of the United States have defended it, supported it and lived by it since it's inception. Let's hope it stays that way.

what everyone else has said: they wrote it to where it could be interpretted situationally. the government now has taken advantage of that fact and amended it over and over to suit what they want. i think the dumbest thing was amending it to prohibit alcohol and then taking it away a very short time later.

Because they know that if they took that away from us, we would hunt them down and.....

They know where their bread is buttered.
