Each DVD player/recorder is made differently. One that costs a little more than the others has the capability to ignore some minor fingerprints or scratches that might be on the DVD. DVD recorders typically cost more, so it might have the capability to still get the information it needs to rip it despite the fingerprints or scratches.

possible scratch on the cd, dust on the dvd lens, the data transfer rate cant keep up (eg the data going between your dvd drive the cpu/ram then the screen)
best idea is to close down all the programs running in the background eg all the icons u can close on the bottom right hand side of the screen and then try and play a dvd.

It might be that:

1. Your DVD player lens is dirty and needs to be cleaned

2. Your DVD player is too slow so when you copy the movie on a hard drive it works well as hard drive is much faster in reading data.

3. You dont have enough of RAM memory in your laptop.

Try first cleaning your DVD laser lens with a special CD's aimed to that purpose.
