Of course his life matters as much as someone else's. Did he commit suicide? Was there negligence in not having a smoke detector or fire escape?
Why do you question whether his life mattered? Is it because the case did not get attention from the news media or police that you have that question? Was there foul play involved? Police need clues to solve a case, there may have been few clues because everything was burned. The media need someone to interview, you could volunteer. You could make informal inquiries about what happened prior to his death and give the information to the police or the news.
Will there be a funeral? A memorial service? Will he have a grave? A tombstone? These things are important to survivors.
I am very sorry for your loss. It will take much time for you to resolve your feelings about this. If you do not have a family member or friend to speak with perhaps you might consider grief counseling with a professional or clergyman.
It is too soon to consider what you will be going through but maybe you can save this and later you will be able to use it to work through your bereavement:
Grief is a complicated, multi-dimensional, individual process that can never be generalized in 5 steps. However, Elisabeth Kubler Ross outlined 5 stages of loss which may help you to understand your own feelings:
Denial, anger, bargaining, depression acceptance.
Grief professionals often use the concept of "Grief Work" to help the bereaved through grief resolution. One common definition of Grief Work is summarized by the acronym TEAR:
T = To accept the reality of the loss
E = Experience the pain of the loss
A = Adjust to the new environment without the lost object
R = Reinvest in the new reality

Apparently his life mattered to YOU! You can be his advocate, talk to the investigating officer(s), to find out whats being done, surely if you press the issue enough you will get answers.
You could also write an article on his life and demise. But will have to try being objective in the matter, then send it to a new paper. There is always a column in any newspaper for letters to the editor, and/or voices. Isn't FREEDOM of SPEECH wonderful?

I am truly sorry about your friend. Many times the news picks stories that will give them a lot of ratings. The other thing is that many times if the news is not contacted about a story they wont come out. Again I am sorry about your friend. The loss of a friend is so great because friendship is so very rare. I say this because I have none. I truly wish I did though. Take care

Yes, all lives matter to me. At times the media are told not to say anything through the investagation. That way, if one comes forward about that person with any information, depending what they say to a police inspector, they then can tell if there will be any suspects in this case or not.

I am so very sorry! god.....what you must be going thru. I know how you feel. everyone going about their business, stores open as usual,....you feel like there's such a lack of respect for your friend. You are disgusted with some people just because they have the nerve to be alive while your friend is dead. take it upon yourself to show your friend some respect and immortalize him. Yahoo answers is a great place to do that. State your friend's full name, and ask if anyone knows what happened to him. and then in the details section, explain what happened and why. it will be therapeutic for you.

Oh my goodness! How terrible. I'm so sorry. Life sure isn't fair. I understand your sorrow, I'm not sure why some deaths are more important than others. Just think of the great memories you two had with each other & be there for his family. I'm so sorry this happened!

Why was he even in an abondoned house? Was he doing drugs? Hiding?
If this is true then that's so sad man. I don't think that no one really cared, maybe he chose to live that way. Go to the funeral, show your support. He'll have someone there that really cares.

I need to ask this because of what an arson investigator once told me during an investigation of a fire set at my house. There is no sensitive way to ask so I apologize in advance. Was it suicide? Did he set the fire? IM me if you don't want to talk about it in the open or email.

Unfortunately there are so many murders the media can't possibly put them all on the news, especially in large markets.
