i know as a former kalpan sat teacher my answer is going to be a little biased, but what the hell.

first, the best way to do better on the sat is to do LOTS of practice tests.
you should take a course and actually do all of the required homework, if you can afford it that it, the course is pretty expensive.
you need to read. i mean read things that have correct grammar and are closer to college material than what you may normally read. the economist is a good place to start. don't read like you would for reading comp because the sat does NOT test reading comp, it tests whether you understand what is being written. it asks you to make connections, understand literary technique, and be able to understand what the author is trying to get at.

you need to look up grammar rules, this is the section students do poorly in at fist simply because they were never taught these rules. look them up and memorize them, not just for the test, but for the rest of your life.

Study study for both the sat and the fri. By study, I don't just mean read, read, read and read over and over. No, much more than that. You also need to have someone ask you the sat questoins, and try to answer them as best, you can. If you get any answers wrong, study some more. If after taking it, you find you still got some wrong, in which case, the right answers might be circled (it helps if they are), study those questions and the right answers, then when you can, take the test again. That can be done, no matter what test is taken.

Look at a SAT book on how the questions are worded so you know how they will be made on the SAT. Because if you don't understand, you can't answer it. How they set it up, what kind of words they use, things like that

I got 2 perfect scores in math and reading, but my writing score was only 720, for a total of 2320. I only read this SAT guide, and that is how I got such high scores:

I recommend this guide to anyone seeking to get a higher score to get into a first choice college.
