They are nasty and hard to get rid of. When the worms hatch, they devour the leaves in the tree. My grandfather used to torch them out of trees but there is probably a preferrable chemical to use nowdays.

AWOL form the army(they took the tents)

But the military ploice will not help as they're busy elsewhere!

So it is up to you! Where you see a tent(wide thick white web in trees) will soon be the birthing place of a quadzillion(well a whole lot anyway) more. So clip that off(easiest) or place plastic shopping bag over hand- grab some tent- pull away and roll bag over -yuck- and seal bag.

If infested(they devastated the NE a while back) it's almost hopeless... but if a few can be removed controlled. If high off ground(or heavily infested) then you'll probably need professional help.

They literally build what looks like a webby tent between tree leaves and limbs. You can spray to get rid of them, but I found it easier just to cut the limb with the whole tent and all out of the tree. That took care of them.

Here on the West coast we call them tent caterpillars. We get rid of them by spraying them with soapy warm water while they are still in the webbed nest. (before hatching out)
