it is plain derogatory, the definition of a person who is considered a loser or a winner depends on the point of view, you might say, it´s in the eye of the beholder.

only "tossers" describe people as "losers". Normally "losers" means "people who don't do the things that I like to pretend that I do". Only a "tosser" would say that. Ultimately, then, these "tossers" are fashion victims, short of their own ideas, and following the crowd for psychological security. They can hardly be described as "winners".
People who think for themselves, on the other hand, are diamonds.

When you here someone calling someone else a loser, the one doing the name calling in reality is a limp biscuit with low self esteem and IQ with self esteem issues, you should view this as a warning sign to avoid that person lest they should rub some of their inadequacy off on you.

its most definitely a derogatory term... mostly used by kids between elementary and high school!.. (and other losers!) well its true it is very derogatory!
