I cannot find statistics at the moment. If I have time, I will search some more. One of the problems is that it costs around $30,000 per year to keep a person in prison. State governments with limited resources must give people a "sense" of security so that after a crime is committed, a person goes to prison. What the general public is not aware of is that prisoners do not usually serve the time that they are sentenced to. Because of overcrowding, prisoners are often freed on parole. About a decade ago, people in the Parents of Murdered Children, lobbied the Michigan legislature to pass a law subtitled "truth in sentencing" which mandates that a prisoner serve 75% of his sentence in prison. Another law passed at that time was "sentencing guidelines" which mandated a minimum sentence for each crime. There was a lot of debate about this issue and it had taken about a decade to get the law passed but now, more murderers, rapists and child molesters spend more time in prison. You may wish to contact the Parents of Murdered Children in your area to see what legislation is pending in your state and which offenders are up for parole. These people know, first hand, what it means to lose someone they love.
