I am going to get my car inspected but the svc shop said it would fail the diagnostics with the check engine light on. The vehicle runs fine but I would like to know the errror code also. Can I check the OBD codes myself?

disconnect the batt. 20 min. to clear the kam should do it. if you are trying to smog the car just resting the light wont help. obd2 equipped cars will set a p1000 code. this tells the smog machine that the self tests the car runs have not been completed and it will fail the test. you can only check the codes w/a scan tool. some parts stores will pull codes for free. good luck

No, you cant check codes on the OBDII systems, go to autozone and have them to check codes for free. Most likely you could have a DPFE sesnsor bad or a Camshaft sensor bad or may have left the fuel cap loose. Unhooking the battery for a min will turn the light off, but if there is a problem it will come back on after you drive it about 20 miles or more.

You can go to Autozone or advance, they will run the code for you free of charge. If you have a power programmer for the car (SCT, Hypertech, JET, etc) most of those models include a diagnostic feature. I doubt you do being its a sable.

They dont go off on their own, you have to fix whats wrong and have them shutoff with the diagnostic tool or programmer if you have one.
