I was waking up my kids and starting my day. I woke my oldest son and told him "Happy Birthday", he was making 19 that day. My daughter was getting ready for school in her room and told me that a plane had crashed into a building in New York. I thought, wow that' s really weird. I had never heard of that happening, but strange things happen. Still going on getting ready, my daughter called out that another plane had hit. I stopped what I was doing and went to the t.v. It was like nothing I'd ever seen. What was happening? I looked at my daughter and said, "This isn't an accident". By now me and all 4 of my kids were trying to get ready to leave but transfixed to the unfolding live drama on t.v. We all left, still not realizing the magnitude of it. After I dropped off my kids, I went to the college I was attending at the time. My professor had the television playing so we could continue to watch. As we became aware of what was unfolding everyone headed home and to schools to pick up their kids. By this time the command had gone out for all aircraft to land wherever they were. I remember standing in the parking lot of the college as all of these planes just kept coming in. I live in Chicago, near Midway airport, so seeing planes come and go is the norm. But seeing all kinds of aircraft, just landing one after another was so odd. I went to the school to get my kids, but they were fine and oblivious to anything doing on, so I let them finish their day. As I pulled up at home my daughter was also screeching in. She jumped out of her car in a panic saying she was so terrified and wondering if the Sears Tower was next. Downtown Chicago looked like a ghost town. I will never forget the way I felt when the towers fell. I cried so uncontrollably. It was so many people, all at once and they just went to work that morning. All while it was happening, I never thought the whole Twin Tower structures would just disintegrate. I don't know about anywhere else, but the skies here were a funny color for the next few days. I think that huge amount of smoke just slowly blew across many of the states. It was appropriate, I think we were all feeling kinda sick for awhile after that.
