The United States doesn't have just one culture, it is a mixture of many. Anyone who says that to you is an egotistical jerk. I've heard that Brazil is quite beautiful, would love to go someday.

I definately have to disagree with that. First of all, there really is no genuine "American" culture. It's more like a mixture of different cultures. You could be an American family with a Japanese background, and have Japanese customs and values, and yet you are still considered an American.
I know the rest of the world thinks that all Americans are fat, ignorant, lazy idiots. But that's not the case. The rest of the world is obviously thinking of the Republican party, not Americans in general!
I'm very interested in other culture. Whenever I meet anyone from a foreign country, I have so many questions that I usually try to stop myself from asking all of them, just so that I won't annoy the person!
And I'm only seventeen from a family that doesn't have too much money, so I haven't had the chance to travel. But someday I will travel all over the world, and learn at least 3 or 4 different languages.
That is why I have to disagree with your statement.

All the Americans who believe that statement (or anybody else who thinks the same) cannot ever argue with anyone who says they are narrow minded, ignorant, prejudice, arrogant, unaccepting, unsocial etc etc, for they are all of those things if they believe in this statement. To fully understand the world and it's people we should value other cultures just like we do our own. If this really is what the Americans believe then it's no wonder they are not getting anywhere in Iraq and are causing conflicts, how can you help countries if you do not understand the foundations of it, i.e. it's CULTURE????

whose phrase is that? An amusing stereotype that I hope only a small percentage of Americans believe in.
Failing to understand other cultures is a loss to oneself and to others.
Im British - I live in Japan, finding out about other cultures is both rewarding and essential for growth. That should apply to foreign policy too.
I hardly think that American culture is 'the best', although my own culture is nothing to go by - any culture that accepts violence/ war should no be heralded in favour above any other.

I am Brazilian too, and have been married to an American. I guess Americans grow up listening to their own songs and watching their own movies (differently from us, who grow up listening to our songs and their, and seeing Brazilian soap operas on tv side by side with American movies). I guess most of the time Americans just have never had the chance of getting in touch with other cultures/values, etc. They are 'self-suficient' in many ways, economical, cultural, etc. USA is best only if you judge cultural by economical parameters only. When it comes to human value, all cultures have their values. I have known many Americans who think they are sitting at the top of the world (economically speaking they can be), but there are many Americans are very down to earth and incredible people! When it comes to American males I think they have far less prejudice against women, for example. On the other hand, they are far less protective than Brazilian males. Every coin has two sides...
Anyway it made me sad that many American think all people in South America are dieing to move into the US, that I wanted to get my whole family in the USA (they would never want to go!) that all Brazilian ladies who fall in love with Americans are green card hunters, etc. It was so sad! I guess American males have more than enough to be loved for the great men they are. Not all women want green cards, many want loving caring men who happened to be Americans.

Typical arrogant ignorant American - being from Brazil does not excuse you.
Did Christopher Columbus make a huge mistake in 1492??
Would we not have been far better off without the discovery of a new world 3000 miles to the West?

As Santa Claus said "Ho, Ho, Ho!"
There isn't really a US culture. The country is still too young to have formed one. It's still made up of Irish Americans, Native Americans, German Americans etc. Each follows their own culture. The attempt to blend them into one universal culture has failed utterly as it tends to result in a bland faceless mish-mash. It's only when the Americans travel abroad that they realise that mostly, they can no longer mix into any individualised culture.

I agree that YOU need to think that it is the best, but you always have to have one eye on the enemy. That includes the enemy within. I am from Brazil, should go back to Brazil, it can't work any other way, and it never could.

America is the only place who shouldn't say that because America is made up of many other cultures. America as a whole stands for nothing which is why we fall for anything.
