I've had a long-running history with both, especiall with school, and I've been wondering for some time now. Please put me out of my misery!!

I lived there for a while.

The Nazis bombed it to pulp in one night in WW2 (for which the British response was to level Dresden).

After the war it was rebuilt in the modern style. Phoenix rising from the ashes.

Some of the tower blocks (the seven story ones, if they haven't knocked them down now) have sort of wing structures on top - that's supposed to be a kind of phoenix idea.

I'm not a great fan of Coventry but the cathedral does rock (both bits).

Coventry was bombed very heavily during WW 2 and the Cathedral burnt down. The subsequent rebuilding was given almost mythical status in the years that followed as a symbolism of British stoicism and ability to 'rise from the ashes'. So the word 'phoenix' was used a lot in relation to Coventry.

Coventry was badly bombed in the war - my nan was there, and it was barely standing when the Germans left it, so like the phoenix that in mythology rose from the flames, so did Coventry.
