My horror story is that a Geek Squad "agent" was so poorly trained that he destroyed my old hard drive in an attempt to transfer data from it to a new computer. I hear lots of other customers have also received terrible work by the Geek Squad.

I have read all the posts on this question, and I totally agree with all of you, 1. You do not have to be certified in Windows to work on a hard drive, you need to be Certified or the appropriate training in Hardware, 2. You do not have to be Certified in Hardware to Deal with Windows problems, but you should have the Training or the knowledge on how Windows, or any OS communicates with the Hardware, thus alot of training or knowledge in Software.. 3. You are not required to be a geek to work on or Service a computer, But the appropriate Training and knowledge should keep you from applying for a job at BestBuy.. Especially the Geek Squad, they are not very well trained or qualified to handle the market now days anyway, unless you expand and grow on a daily basis with the technology and know how then you end up with a Windows 95 trying to compete or match a Windows XP.. Just my opinion of the Geek Squad, Nothing more to add, but always be careful who works on your beloved PC, it could be a minimum wage person who Have's too, or someone who does it for the love of the challenge.. Good Luck to All.

BestBuy pays those kids squat, so it's not too surprising you don't get a lot of technical know-how and ability.

BestBuy is a rip-off operation anyway. I bought a flatbed scanner there a few years ago that had a magazine from some lawyer in a neighboring community inside it when I set it up. Of course, the BestBuy manager swore up and down that they wouldn't put returned merchandise back on the shelf and sell it as new, but "mistakes happen" I guess.

Almost every time I've bought from them I've come to regret it. We bought my daughter a TV from them for Christmas last year - she discovered it only had a 90 day warranty when it stopped working after five months.

To make a long story short, I almost got in a fight with one of them. Best Buy called the police on me and had me escorted out of the store
