Usually for an audition, you wear plain, black, comfortable clothes...it's the designer and director who will decide what the costume is...just try to remain neutral in that aspect....you wouldn't want to lose a role based on a costume.

Anne Frank, as you know, was a little girl when Hitler's systematic persecution and murder of Jews started. Just a girl. She knew nothing of politics or hunger or hatred. She was like most little girls.

Imagine you...tonight...the police knock on your door...and tell you...from now on you and your family have to wear a band on your arm so that they will know your religion when you walk the street....imagine it, for yourself...it's quite sur-real to think about.
Anne Frank was living in a very sur-real world in which people often did not know what was really going on.

If the police told you tonight that you had to wear an arm band from now on, chances are...you would probably do it...because it's the police asking. Chances are you would not forsee that, that arm band was to be worn because the Germans needed to know who was to be killed and who was not.

My point in all of this, is that Anne Frank never saw what was coming. She was always full of hope that circumstances would get better. She didn't see death around the corner...she only saw the people in front of her and was committed to them...no matter the hard-ships she went through.

She was a little girl.... as you were once. So never play her sorrow...play her hope.

Good luck, dear girl.

Preparing for a cold reading is kind of a contridication because the word "cold" means you are getting the script immediately before you audition. So, if it is a published play (like "The Diary of Anne Frank") you should pick up a copy in advance and read it as many times as you can before the audition. And don't forget that plays are meant to be read out loud. So, don't read it to yourself. Practice makes perfect, so do it over and over and ovr--OUT LOUD. Also. never ever wear anything that draws attention away from your performance. No logos, no symbols, no outfits that look like you are trying to distract from your performance. A lot of girls try to show off their figures (and great if you have a wonderful figure, just don't let it upstage you), but it is distracting. You should always look like you are worth what you want to make (re: I want to make a million dollars, therefore, I should like like a million dollars). And finally, overcoming the role--I am a big fan (having directed before) of letting the part play you. DON'T try to play a part. Figure out the part of you that can relate to the character and build on that. And, lastly, always believe in yourself. Break-a-leg!

Dress in comfy clothing. Like a nice shirt and a good pair of jeans. Personally i wouldn't dress as the character only because they might think you are trying to hard.
For cold reading just relax, once they give you the part read over it and if you arn't ready when they want you to read it ask them if you can have a little more time to read over it.
