This happened to my son at uni. They found them under the settee.
My eldest was sleeping over with them and in the middle of the night he woke and saw them and watched them he then followed them back to the resting place which was under the settee.

As most people have said, almost the only likely culprits are slugs (snails for some reason are much less likely) coming in after dark. The silver trail is their slime.
Next question: how do you get rid of them?
Four main ways:
1. Salt dissolves them in a particularly disgusting way, and leaves a horrible mushy mess afterwards. It does do the trick, but clearing up afterwards is not pleasant. Slugs know salt will kill them and will avoid it at all costs, so a line of salt will stop them. However, they can and do arch their way over it, so if you put down a line of salt to stop them coming into your room, make it a wide one.
2. Heat. In nature they avoid hot and dry conditions as it dries them out, so a well-heated room will put them off.
3. Food. We had problems with slugs coming into the kitchen at night, and found they were heading for the cat's food bowl (they liked the dry pellets). Once we moved the food into another room, there were far fewer slugs. I don't know if they can see or smell food, or just remember where it is, but removing it does seem to discourage them.
4. Slug pellets, but make sure to get the ones which are harmless to pets.
There are other ways (glasses of beer - slugs crawl in and meet a drunken-drowned death) but they are far more suitable for outdoors. (Who wants a stale glass of beer full of dead slugs on the floor of the lounge?)
Slugs also climb - we found slug trails on the curtains (no food there!) so beware.
Hope this helps.

This is the second time we have found these trails. They are only in one section of the carpet. It seems ridiculous that it could be snails, but I can t see what else it could be. I am putting down some slug pellets so will see if the snails turn up as an empty shell at a later date. I will try and keep this forum informed.

.If you have House Plants in the Room you found the Slim trail then that is where they probably are coming from, they were probably there when the Plant was bought.
Check the soil by turning it out and then check around the Roots, that's where they lay their eggs, they burrow in Soil.
Re-pot the the Plant or Plants with fresh soil and put some Vaseline around the Top of the Pot edge, broken up Egg Shells around the top of Soil helps too .Snails and Slugs don't like the Grease,

It'll be slugs or snails, it happened at my sister's old house. Go into your lounge in the middle of the night and you'll probably see them.
Slugs can get through little gaps you know. Try putting salt down across entrances that might stop it.

Carpets are obviously comfier and warmer but in some instances, impractical. Our kitchen has cushion floor tiling for ease of cleaning, our bathroom is actually a wet room with a non slip surface. The hallway and living room I intend to laminate as they are considered to be heavy traffic area's.You can't beat the cosiness of a carpet to greet your toes when you get out of bed in the morning though.

o.k, so it's slugs. But what in the name of the Great Big Holy Slug are they doing on the carpet at night? Eating crumbs or so?
Oh sorry, this isn't an answer but another question...

Maybe its one of a number of people who answer questions on this site, their trademark is " slime "
No this is quite definitely a slug and where there is one you will find others.
Try salt, lightly sprinkled around the carpet edge and around large items of furniture where the undersides are close to the surface of the carpet.
