I see it now and then, but not used in a context like "racism" or "sexism." Rather, it's used as a synomym for homosexual. What's up with that?

An 'ism' by definition is a classification of a social/cultural or ethnic 'type' or 'group'. Therefore gayism can only be termed in this sense It seems to me to be an attempt by people to make being 'gay' as an identifiable thing that can gain some sort of political credence or credential. Therefore people can turn around and accuse others of gayism much as they might sexism or racism or any other kind of ism they choose to create.

i've heard it used in reference to a mannerism associated, often mistakenly, with gay men i.e. standing with a hip ******. or lisping or some other affectation. it's amazing how easy it is to mangle english
