The Empire State building is built much stronger than the twin towers were. The domino effect of the collapse shows the misguided engineering involved in the towers. Cost effective engineering has a tendency to use the max values in determining load factors and resistance. Although the plane in 1945 was much smaller the big reason was probably the integrated beam structure of the Empire State Building.

It would be interesting to see a comparison of the structural strength of the two buildings. That will probably never be done because modern engineering would be embarrassed by the results.

The plane in 1945 was small and it was moving slowly. The big jet in 2001 had a lot of fuel. It was the burning fuel that caused the WTC's to collapse.

It was the jet fuel that caused the towers to fall the intense heat from the fuel burning is what caused the structure to fail causing it to collapse. Not the hit or damage caused from impact ... the flame retardant and metal fatigued because it was not designed to withstand this type of condition.

JET FUEL and lots of it. jet fuel burns at a much higher temperature than the diesel used in those old airplanes (back then they called them aeroplanes) which doesn't really burn all that easily. also, modern day commercial airliners are gigantic next to those old four prop bombers.

because in 1945 bombers weighed less than modern commercial air-crafts and didn't use the powerful jet fuel that today's planes use.
