Left, right, and center are arbitrary semi-meaningless terms.
Conservatives support the concepts of traditional values, conformity, security, tranquility. There is a split in the conservative movement between fiscal conservatives who want small government, and neo-conservatives (neo-cons) who see the advantages of a large powerful federal government to advance their social agenda.
Neo-cons are sometimes referred to as the far right, even by some members of the conservative movement. Conservatives favor small taxes. Fiscal conservatives by reducing govt spending, and neo-cons by increased deficit spending.
Liberals support the concepts of personal freedom and liberties, protection of the environment, and lack of govt regulation of private choices. There is a split in the liberal movement between those who support large govt to support large social programs (like welfare and subsidies), and those who prefer smaller govt, job training and education as means to help people not need govt subsidies. Liberals prefer to find projects out of tax money, rather than deficit spending.
The concept of the "center" represents the average American, counting all the various beliefs and perspectives.
The left-right spectrum refers to the liberal-conservative spectrum. But as noted, it's not a single line. An equally valid spectrum would be Libertarian (small govt, fiscal conservatives and education-based liberals) versus Federalist (big govt, neo-cons and social-liberals).

These and many other terms have little agreed to meaning. What is more important is to see that the corrupt two-party duopoly (Democratic and Republican parties) exert a stranglehold on American politics; what we sorely need is more third-party candidates that will fight to restore our democracy, as explained in the great new book "Delusional Democracy - Fixing the Republic Without Overthrowing the Government."
