Okay, so I might be a little biased here being a writer myself, but I would unquestionably consider it on par with painting and music.

There are so many characters, scenes, and places that could be chosen, and it's up to the writer to pick whatever combination they want, whatever they think will work best. There are an endless number of ways to structure sentences. Not to mention creating imagery with descriptions. All of that is really no less artistic than painting strokes with a brush.

Above definatley, words make a picture in people's minds, a picture which is created through the words, a picture which only that person can see. Another person may see somthing similar, but never the exact same thing. Which makes the beauty of the picture in the minds eye the most beautifull it can be to that person. Words are the most powerfuul things on the planet. From what I have written here you may get an image in your mind, of truth, by looking at my avatar you get a set picture that implies everything but tells nothing. Music is expression, a way of getting feelings across, so are words, music whatever the song will make one person happy, and will annoy another. However words on a page are more clear than in a song and portray the right emotion for that place in the book/other, and everyone will feel a part of it. You could hear things about a person like they are a hard core rock fan, or they are annoying, that is oppinion, and in my writting I tell the truth about me. It gives a clear recognisable picture in the mind. If you showed a person a painting, then showed another person a discription of that painting they will remember it longer. As the words would be more powerfull, and allthough wouldn't show the painting exactly, it would be near. And far more beautiful.

If anyone wants me to answer their question then mail me.

Absolutely. It's creative. It starts in your mind and it builds from there. When doing Arts/English in a university you will find that creativity is the basis for learning to use the English language well.. Is it on a par with other arts? It certainly is. But each of the arts is unique and requires differing talents. For all that, it is an art and it is definitely not easy, just as creating a painting or composing a piece of music is an enormous feat of endurance. Think of some of the classics and there's your answer.

With out a doubt. The word music is actually derived from the Greek "musike" which was used to describe anything (poetry, painting, music, etc) that was inspired by the Muses (those that inspire art). Writing, painting and music are all just unique ways to express the same artistic impulse to create. Different people just tend towards different vehicles of expression. There are loads of books and essays on this. You might want to check out Music and The Novel (sorry I forget the author) and Edward Said's and David Barenboim's Parells and Paradoxes. Also, Alain de Button has a good chapter in The Art of Travel about painting. It's one of the last ones in the book on Vincent Van Gogh. Hope that helps...or atleast leads to some people that can answer your question much better than I could.

Yes for sure.
All three can paint detailed worlds, or characters, real and imagined.
And as a writer does it with words, a painter does on canvas with paint and musicians do it with music.
And like with painters, and musicians there are good ones, and bad ones.
One is art for the eyes, another for the ears, and the other for the mind, all are appreciated by the soul.
