it's a large backyard. Hardly any grass from the previous owners and lots of stickers. Should I dig up the grass and stickers and re-seed the yard with Fescue?

My husband and I had a smiliar problem - we rented a machine that took off the top few inchs of soil (I think this was called a turf cutter). It left us with a blank slate to work on. No weeds, or bits of crabgrass - so we could work on putting down fertlizer and new sod without worrying about weeds.

For this year, pull up the stickers and mow the law short. Drop some Lime on the lawn about once every 3 to 7 days until the end of September. Yes, that is alot of lime.

Then plant grass seed toward the end of September, and keep the lawn well watered until the dry or winter season comes. Then resume watering and mowing daily, but start to raise the height of the mower as grass starts to come in. (Yes, the mower was low, so that it cut weeds).

You want to build an environment that favors grass growth, instead of weeds. But pulling up everything is excess work, when nature can do it for you.

In September, spread corn gluten over the entire area. It will help keep the stickers from germinating next spring. You may need to reapply if you get a lot of rain (a problem I don't have). It would help to use burlap to run around the yard to pick up the stickers first.
Wait until next spring to reseed the grass or the gluten will kill the grass seed.

once you've useless weeds you extremely favor to tear it up fairly than in basic terms mulch it, or the weeds will come lower back into the recent backyard. the in simple terms way i recognize to do that's to pull it or burn it. perhaps in case you spray weed killer on it and enable it set for some days that ought to do the trick. My backyard is lack of life too for the shortcoming of rain.
