Vietnam was one of the stupidest things we ever did, and it seems that the phrase "if you cannot remember history, you are doomed to repeat it" proves prophetic in the Iraq War. It is basically dealing with similar circumstances; we all-powerful Americans think we can just barge into another country and into the middle of a dispute that has been continuing for many decades...and WE BELIEVE THAT WE CAN STOP IT. Y'know, make them all get along in the Middle East. Like hell! They have no common sense; they're terrorizing and bombing their OWN PEOPLE.

Liberating any country is hard becuase you're trying not to hurt any innocent people. If we wanted to take Vietnam, or for that matter, Iraq the war would have been over in a few days. Our goal was to liberate the country (in both cases) and instill a democratic government. The problem in both cases is that we misjudged the difficulty of the situation. However, if we pull out now it would be a big mistake, but the president needs to take a different approach because what we're doing now isn't working.

There was no intelligence involved in going into Iraq.
It is being fought in much the same way as Viet Nam and with the same results. Its already lasted longer than I think.Bush thought it would.
Yes sadly it has become much like Viet Nam,an unwinnable ,unpopular war and an exit strategy must be formulated and not just Bush's exit in 2008.
My husband was a POW in Cambodia during the war in Viet Nam for 15 long months don't you dare say it was "torn" down by hippies and liberals, you don't have any idea what real war is,if your so damn gungho them get you azz to Iraq they need you.You are the one that's not supporting your country and you are the one that should be charged with treason. You are ignorant and know nothing about war.

"If you cannot remember history, you are doomed to repeat it."
This is a very good statement. Unfortunately, each situation presents its own set of variables -and no two events are exactly alike.

But you must remember that, if we learned anything in Viet Nam, it is this: We can give a country all of the economic, military and technical help we can possibly muster, but if the people of that country aren't willing to stand up and fight for their own rights and freedom, we will fail. That, in a nut shell, is why we failed in Viet Nam.

There was no indication that the people of Iraq wouldn't help fight a regime as obviously oppressive and fear mongering as Saddam's. In fact, all of our pre-war data and intelligence indicated that we, as liberators, would be successful. Obviously, our intelligence and our conclusions based on that intelligence is another question entirely.

In any event, we have given the people of Iraq a great opportunity to determine their own future in a free and democratic society. The rest is totally up to them. If they squander this opportunity, It will not be a failure of the United States for its lack of effort or its commitment - it will be a failure of the Iraqi people to stand against intolerance and injustice and fight for their own freedom.

You may be right about this. The NeoCons really think that regime change can make over the Middle East, but Defense just chopped off as much of the Armed Forces as they could manage. Waging a full scale war was not in the plan. Our people are doing their best but there just aren't enough of them. The underlying cause of conflict are usually economic disparity and corruption. That's what they've ignored. We're doomed though. We can't get out.

Mr. George Bush Father was criticized for not taken down Hussein when he had the chance, then he wrote a book to defend himself and gave details of what was expected if he tried to take Hussein, not only in Iraq but in the region and USA. Guess what, exactly what he predicted is what is happening now, to the letter, and to answer your question... a Jackass couldn't has planned it worse. Oh sorry... a Jackass did planed it!!!

NO PLAN SURVIVES CONTACT WITH THE ENEMY !!

Historically speaking , compared to other wars , Iraq has been brilliantly lead and conducted.
Nothing on this kind of scale is ever perfect, so don't expect it .
We could cut and run, leaving Iraq to civil war and eventual takeover by Iran and Syria . Giving the terrorists a safe base of operations from which to hit us again , access to funding thru more oil sales and a perceived Victory .
We pulled out of Viet Nam , purely for political reasons and the result was millions dead in S. Viet Nam , Cambodia and laos .

Let's kill the enemy in his backyard , not ours .

The view on Vietnam took years to develop, and it is only in hindsight that we recognize the failure that occurred. Unfortunately, we live in a media driven world that attempts to force us to quicker evaluations. The efforts in Iraq are having many positive repercussions, most of which are flat out ignored and unreported. We need to stay the course, and Iraq will be a democratic beacon in a troubled region in the coming years.

In a hundred years, people will look back on this war and say it makes Vietnam look like a Mensa convention. I think this is the final straw for the US. The world is soon to lose all respect for us.

i didnt agree with the war to begin with
we had no concrete proof there were WMDs in Iraq
and Iraq did not pose a direct threat to the USA
they did not threaten us
or bomb us or anything to that effect
But now that we're in this mess we cant pull out,
we've destroyed these peoples homeland
if we abandon it now, another dictator just as bad as Hussein could seize power
and this one will be especially pissed at the united states and whatever other countries helped us out
Afghanistan we had reason to go in there to get Al Queda
Iraq there was no reason other than Bush and the people who control him wanted war
and one of the reasons they are bombing their own people is over religion
and religion is something our govenrment cant touch, no matter how much force you use
people will most likely stand by their beliefs that other religions are wrong and are doomed to go to hell, or whatever eternal punishment their religion may believe in
