Because the basic element of democracy is choice by the people.
If the people are only presented with one option, it's effectively no different than not having the ability to make a choice.

so one side does not rule absolutely. The men that created our nation were actually pretty smart. England was ruled by a king...to prevent that from happening here, a democracy was established to allow voting & majority rule. Politics - although frustrating is an adversarial relationship - designed that way purposefully so the "scales" never tip too far to one side. Differing opinions are what keeps the country mostly in the center. Graudually politics has shifted conservative due to (some believe) to our contry's position as the most powerful & one of the wealthiest on the planet. (the argument of voting & being poor in America is difficult to believe when compared to truly poor in 2nd & 3rd world nations). Democrats (the traditional balance to Republicans) are "updating" their differing opinions to account for our nation's role in a global village.

It's important to have a democratic nation in order to know where the economy is heading...The Opposition plays an important role in bringing to the attention of the political party in power about the aims and goals of the nation.

So that we can come up with better solutions to problems facing us. Apollo 11 didn't land on the moon because of a single individual. Opposing points of view are necessary so that all sides of an argument can be considered, hopefully leading to the best solution possible.
