There are a number of reasons for choosing a particular college or university.

Some people want to experience a new place with people of their own age and interests.

Some recognize that living away from home is going to be better than living at home. You can concentrate on doing your schoolwork without having your little brother come in and mess things up, or your parents imposing a curfew which interferes with your social life.

Some take the opportunity to make a break with their families so that they can do things on their own.

Some recoginze the the university in their city either doesn't exist or doesn't have the programs they are interested in. The hometown university also might not have the quality of program that is needed. Lets face it, if you want to study chemistry, and the local college only has one course in it, you are not going to get very far there.

Some also discover that each university has its strengths, weaknesses, and style. Picking out one which fits your strengths, weaknesses, and style gives you a better chance of enjoying your stay.

Some universities have certain reputations which play very well when you go for a job. Others don't.

Recognize that at university, one tends to do a lot of stuff that is geared towars 18 to 25 year olds. These activities would drive parents nuts. Staying up all night to finish that paper, hitting the library until it closes, pizza at 10 pm, long discussions about some arcane ideas in philosphy, and homework. Even if you stay home, you really aren't there.

Well i went to drama school in London because that is where a lot of the work is. Some uni's are better at some subjects too, so the one near your home has does not have the course you want you have to move to one that does. It is also good for social skills and learning basic skills like paying bills and running you own house. Those kind of skill are what they mean about the University of life

I went because I need a change of pace. I stayed at a local school my first two years than transferred out of state. I felt like I was stuck in a rut at home. I was seeing people I knew from high school in college, which was just weird. The bad part about going out of state is that you basically start from scratch and have to not only learn the city but make new friends. And if you're like me, you left all your family behind so it gets lonely. Sometimes I regret my decision, but most of the time I don't.

First of all people go, because of a desire to be in another environment. Some people want to see what else is out there, rather than be limited to being at home. Also, another univ. can provide a specific major or program that a local college doesn't have. I left home to go to school to get away from parents so that I could learn to survive on my own.

Cost. Where I live the Univesity of Illinois cost too much, so I commute and hour each way to Eastern Illinois University.

Eastern Illinois University is not very diverse. The town is 98% white and I am African-American. The other 2% of the population are associated with the University and they come and go. While the town promotes diversity and trys to recruite more of it, they are not succseeding in sustaing it. They are still unsure of how to celebrate MLK b-day, so they don't recognize it educationally, or culturally.

These are my reasons.....

Going away from home to college is part of the process of growing up. It allows you the freedom to see new places and experience new things with new friends. It becomes difficult to try new experiences when you are living at home. Parents mean well, but they become over-protective and deny you opportunities when you need to make your own decisions. Parents become afraid that you will make bad choices, but if they have done a good job raising you, your values will be similar to what you have experienced at home. The opportunities to experience life away from home is something you must do. You learn from the positives and the negative experiences.

Because not all Universities offer the same courses, and not all will take you based on your grades, Some require higher grades than others.

Also, some courses are more popular than others, and can fill up all their spaces in a matter of hours.

The best reason though, is that you are sick of living at home and want some fun! lol

People pick colleges based on interest and the quality of the school, as well as financial attainability, not based on where they live. If you live in Boston and can get into Harvard, by all means go, but if you live in Jacksonville and get into Harvard, why would you go to Jacksonville University just bc it's close to home?

Also, everyone should move out of your house, whether or not you attend school in your hometown. JMO.

It's a whole new experience; it's about breaking out of the comfort zone and opening your mind to a new experience and some universities don't offer programs that you may want to go into.
