I heard that too. They say it's because it costs more then a penny to produce a penny. Plus the fact that alot of people just throw them in a coffee can or jar at home so there running out of pennies. I know I have a jar full.

Considering that it costs 1.3 cents to make a penny, the idea has been under discussion.
