Search on E-bay if you don't mind a used dress. The other alternative would be to find a simple elegant, dress and add some beading or trimming of your own. I think the simpler dresses are much more elegant than the ones with all the fancy beadwork. In the end, no one knows how much you paid for it anyway unless you tell them. Here is an example of what I am talking about. It is in the bridesmaid section. http://www.davidsbridal.com/bridesmaids_bycolor_detail.jsp?stid=2659&sid=10139&cfid=6

I got married last year and bought all my wedding outfit, bridesmaids, honeymoon stuff off of Ebay and a fraction I would have paid in the shops. You could also look around the Charity shops in the High Street, or in the local paper as people often sell their wedding dresses at a ridiculous price, or donate them to charity. Good luck and I hope you have a really lovely wedding day!

Look in your local phone directory for an upscale resale shop. They often have very expensive wedding dresses - sometimes ones never worn for a fraction of their original cost. I know someone who got a $1000 dress at one for $125. The bride had sold it because the wedding was cancelled at the last minute and since it was altered - she couldn't return it to the place where it was purchased. Weddings do not have to be expensive. My daughter's wedding - complete with a band, liquor and a sit down dinner reception for 100 people cost less than $2000. It can be done with a lot of footwork and with talented friends and relatives helping to make things! We made or purchased all the decorations. At the reception we rented white tablecloths from a local linen service and topped them with a single mirror tile ( buy the cheap ones by the dozens at places like Lowe's etc.) and a tall glass vase with a single red rose and a white candle. We sprinkled the table with silver confetti and it was gorgeous. You can also rent dinnerware from party planners for less than you can purchase paper products. The cost for us to rent glasses, plates, and silverware was a little over $100. If you have time to do things yourself , stay away from wedding planners. You will pay extra for a lot of simple things you can do yourself. Have fun!

You can always find a semi formal dress or even a white prom dress and if need be add extra decorations... David's Bridal does most of the time have dresses on sale for $99, but you'd have to find one you like... I've always thought the simpler dresses with little decoration are prettier then the over the top fancy ones.

Have you tried a charity shop?? I know it sounds daft, but they get some lovely ones in some shops. Ask a bridal hire place if they have any dresses for sale; they sell off dresses before new stocks come in; advertise in your local free paper, saying whether you want short or full length, with or without a train; I bet you will have loads of them offered at a price you can afford, some even with veil and head-dress!! Good luck.

If you don't want to 'breat' the bank, go to a charity shop. The dresses have only been worn once and then only for a couple of hours!! What a waste of money. Another thing I've noticed; most brides are fat - why is this?

Consignment shops are a good place to shop. You may also want to nose about your friends for any good seamstress' - and take a design of your choice to them. Mine was completed for $200 and even two years after the wedding people still give me compliments on what a beautiful dress it was and they are stunned to learn it was made from scratch.

Try looking in the For Sale column of your local paper. Or perhaps a visit to a local charity/goodwill shop.
Or try finding out which stores have end of season sales etc.
