Let Sam's age be x. Father=4x. Grandfather=8x.
x+4x+8x=104
13x=104
x=8
Hence, Sam is 8 years old. His father is 32. Grandfather is 64.

You have to consider that between all of them they equal 13 times Sam's age. 104/13=8. So Sam is 8 years old, his father is 32 and his grandfather is 64.

let Sam be "s"
Sam's father = 4s
Sam's grandfather = 2(4s)= 8s

sam's age + sam's father's age + sam's grandfather's age = 104

s+ 4s+ 8s = 104
13s = 104
s = 104/13
s = 8

Hence Sam is 8 years old, his father is 32, [4s = 4(8)=32], his grandfather is 64, [8s=8(8)=64]

Going back to Anjali's answer:
x+4x+8x=104
13x=104
x=8
Hence, Sam is 8 years old. His father is 32. Grandfather is 64.
------------------------------------------------
x + 4x + 8x = 104
She is adding all the "x's" on the left hand side of the equation.
Same as 1 + 4 + 8 = 13.

Hope this clarifies it for you.

Let s = sam's age. Let f = father's age. Therefore f = 4s. Let g = grandfather's age. Therefore g = 2f. The problem says s + f + g = 104. Use substituion to solve for s. You do the details.
