Its really loud, only at night, and very annoying!

I'd guess they're cicadas - but one year I had a Woodpecker in the pine tree at the end of my drive and he would wake me up at dawn for weeks. The tree was AT LEAST 60 feet from my bedroom. It was LOUD.

either cicadas or katydids. it's usually katydids. they make a very fast, very loud clicking sound. i hear them in the spring here in las vegas. and i remember hearing them at summer camp when i was a kid near calistoga, ca. i may have spelled katydids wrong.
