ES 1024 24 PORT UNMANAGED SWITCH.

I want to have 24 ports for internet and lan. Can I just plug this in and go... If the difficulty of use is minimal, I would still by it, but I need advice before I buy.

the IT guy at our tech college said to get a switch... what is the difference between hub and switch?

Yep, it will do fine. Plug and play, no setup needed. Your IT guy is absolutely correct!

I'm somewhat stunned that so many people have got this wrong! A switch is ALWAYS preferable to a hub! And there's no need for a relatively expensive 3Com unit with a gigabit uplink in the scenario you describe.

The difference between a switch and hub can best be explained with an analogy. A switch is like using the phone in your office to call someone in the office down the hall. The communication is private. A hub is like yelling at him down the hall. Everyone hears it.

A hub copies all packets received to all ports whereas a switch only copies them to the port where the destination host is connected. Hosts connected to a hub can only transmit and receive sequentially. Hosts connected to a switch can transmit and receive at the same time. A switch is therefore much more efficient. A switched network can carry much more traffic than a network using hubs.
