The toilet is less than 1 year old. It has one of those newer type of floats. It slides up and down to adjust it but no matter where I put it the water keeps running in the tank. I can stop the water by pulling up on the float manually after every flush. But my boyfriend doesnt seem to understand how to do that. Can someone suggest how to fix the toilet please?

I think the problem is in the flapper, maybe its torn or something, or maybe there is some debris keeping it from closing fully on the hole....take a look down there.....you might want to think twice about that guy, by the way

I have similar experience with my American Standard toilet. The floatation device is inside of a yellow containment. I can set water level by the position of the yellow box. If you have the same type, you are very lucky. Because after I spend a few months working with it, I finally figured it out.

In my toilet, inside the yellow box, there is a plastic lever with an upside down cup at the end. This cup acts as the floater. When water is filled up, the upside down cup floats to the top position and stop the water from flowing. The problem I had was that the body of the yellow box was leaking. After I moved the box up and down several times, I filled up the inside of the box with water, including inside the upside cup. So the cup no longer float. To fix it, you have to turn off the water, remove the yellow box from the toilet, turn it upside down to drain the water. Now you can put it back in. If you don't want to ever deal with it again, seal the outside of the box with duck tape or sealant.

if when you pull the ball float up it stops the water, you need to try two things
1 screw the ball clockwise on the metal shaft that it is on till the water stops, or 2 you need to bend that same metal shaft in a downward position.
what all this means is that the float ball (that shuts the water off) needs to be repositioned.
the ball is setting to high and it's not able to put enough pressure on the valve on the top of the tower, which shuts the water off. bend the shaft a little at a time. if you bend it too far you will not get enough water in the tank to flush the toilet correctly. usually there is a mark inside the tank that says WATER LEVEL. try to get the water to stop at this mark. look closely for that water level mark

Hi, It could be 2 things. 1 the flapper is not going all the way down, something maybe under the flapper, so it won't close all the way.2 You may need to replace the float.

Sounds like you have a fluid master (brand name) many hotels and motels use these. They are cheap and effecient. Turn off water supply, remove top cap, you will see a black rubber washer you can turn it over. Or hardware stores sell fluid master repair kits for under five dollars. It could be old or have a piece of dirt. If you continue pulling up on the float you will have leaks.happy flushing!
