The story is complicated but in theory everything and everyone effects the future so the simple killing of a Butterfly that did not actually die at that time upsets future events

Chaos theory attempts to explain the fact that complex and unpredictable results can and will occur in systems that are sensitive to their initial conditions. A common example of this is known as the Butterfly Effect. It states that, in theory, the flutter of a butterfly's wings in China could, in fact, actually effect weather patterns in New York City, thousands of miles away. In other words, it is possible that a very small occurance can produce unpredictable and sometimes drastic results by triggering a series of increasingly significant events.

well the Butterfly story I know goes like this...
One day a small opening appeared on a cocoon;
A man sat and watched for the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through the little hole.
Then, it seemed to the man the it (the butterfly)stopped making any progress. It appeared as if it had gottened as far as it could and it could not go any further.
So the man decided to help the butterfly; He took a pair of scissors and cut open the cocoon.
The Butterfly emerged out very easily.
But it had a withered body, it was tiny and had shrivelled wings.
The man continued to watch because he expected that at any moment the wings would open, Enlarge, to be able to support the butterflys body, and become firm. But neither happened!!!!
In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of his life crawling around with a withered body and shrivelled wings, it was never able to fly.
What the man in his kindness and good will dod not understand was the the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get the tiny opening were God's way of forsing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so it would be ready for flight for to achieve its freedom from the cocoon.
Sometimes Struggles are Exactly what we need in our life in order to handle our world better.

In the future, science and technology has enabled people from the future to visit the past. However, they have to follow a certain path so that they do not disturb the past and alter the future.

However, there was this dude who left tthe path and killed a butterfly by accident. This death plus the effect of time multiplied into a series of events which changed the future.

Read the book. It's great!

Everything effects everything else. that butterfly in the chain changed natural evolution and the chain of events to completely alter the future in waves of time.
