Sam is x years old, his father is 4x years old, and his grandfather is 8x years old. Unless they give you a total age or something you can't assign specific numbers to each.

As stated this problem does not have a definitive answer...
Sam = X
Dad = 4X
Gdad = 2(4X) or 8X
If Sam is 1 then Dad is 4 and grandad is 8
If Sam is 2 then Dad is 8 and grandad is 16
If Sam is 3 then Dad is 12 and grandad is 24
If Sam is 4 then Dad is 16 and grandad is 32
If Sam is 5 then Dad is 20 and grandad is 40 < first biologically possible answer
We need at least one number in the problem to tell us what the result should be
All we have is this:
X + 4X + 2(4X) = ???? simplified to 13X= ?????

There is more than one correct answer here. To break it down, let's say that Sam is 'X' years old. His father is four times his age, so he would be 4X (four times X). The grandfather is twice as old as the father, so he would be (two times four X) or 8X.
If you know anyone of the three's age, you can figure out the other two. For example, let's say Sam is 5. His father is 4x5=20. And the grandfather would be 8x5=40.

To get the answer yoo r looking for... you need to know one of the variables (one of their ages)
example: Sam is 10 y/o making his dad 40 y/o and grandpa 80

There could be many possible answers. Like the person above me said, that's right. But this could also work: 10, 40, 80. It seems more logical age wise, but there are alot of possibilities. like this too: 9, 36, 72

Either you're asking the question wrong, or this could have an infinite amount of correct answers (mathematically speaking)
It could be 80, 40, and 10.
It could be 60, 30, and 7.5
It could be 80,000, 40,000, and 10,000
They are all mathematically correct. I think this is a dumb question.

how old is sam? if you know sam's age multiply that by 4 and you'll get sam's dad and multiply that result by 2 and you'll get the age of granpa.
