The answer is in the serial number. Here is an example. Working from the back of serial number. If the serial number is 2963140 -take 40 and reverse it so the month is 04 or April. The next set of two digits are for the day and is 31. Reversed this 13. The next set of two numbers is 96. Reversed this is 69 or 1969. In this example the manufactured date is 4/13/69.

I would take it to an antique dealer or maybe get ahold of the company since you have the serial number

VERY IMPORTANT - MANY OF THESE WERE RECALLED - please see the following website - it will also give you a number to call Lane and find out when it was made - but many of these latch shut automatically and can trap a child inside, suffocating them.
