The purpose of law's and punishment is not vengence but perserving our rights.

"Political power, then I take to be a right of making laws, with penalties of death, and consequently all less penalties for the regulating and preserving of property, and of employing the force of the community in the execution of such laws, and in the defense of the commonwealth from foreign injury, and all this only for the public good."

"Everyone as his is bound to preserve himself, and not to quit his station willfully, so by the like reason, when his own preservation comes not in competition, ought he as much as he can to preserve the rest of mankind, and not unless it be to do justice on an offender, take away or impair the life, or what tends to the preservation of the life, the liberty, health, limb, or goods of another."

"…all men may be restrained from invading others’ rights, and from doing hurt to one another…."

"…varying from the right rule of reason, whereby a man so far becomes degenerate, and declares himself to quit the principles of human nature and to be a noxious creature, there is commonly injury done, and some other (person) receives damage by his transgression; in which case, he who hath received any damage has a particular right to seek reparation from him that hath done it."

"Each transgression may be punished to that degree, and with so much severity, as will suffice to make it an ill bargain to the offender."

Purpose of punishment is not vengence.

Our legal system (at least in the US) is not based on 'vengeance'.

Some other countries (usually run by religious zealots) seem to have laws where vengeance is dealt with by men in power - taking a God-like roles. Icky.

Because we live in a society of multicultural with many different faiths, thus all people do not believe in Bible. Even those who believe in bible, the approach to compliance to Bible varies depending on their understanding. Do you know how many different Christianity exist just in USA?

At any rate, the legal system is always based on moral and this of the society, so it can apply to anyone, regardless of his/her faith.

Because bible is a work of fiction(or at least an allegory) - and is not legally binding.
Instead of looking for unlikely salvation and revenge in the world to come, people like to solve problems in the REAL world.

Because, "vengeance is his" after we die, the legal system is ours while we're alive. And you do realize that not everyone beleives in the bible, so the rule of law applies to everybody, while religious law applies only to those who have faith.

society is not made completely of christians.
actually legal system is not for vengeance. if you punish your kids for wrong doing , ideally it is not out of anger nor is it for vengeance. crime / going against rules needs PUNISHMENT. it has nothing to do with vengeance. legal system is for correction / punishment of offenders.
